Millinery Classwork

THEA 545: Millinery for the Stage

University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Instructor: Melissa Caldwell-Weddig

Fall 2017

In this class, we built a variety of different hats, including a pillbox, a wire tiara, and a wire-frame bonnet. The final project required us to block and wire a felt hood, that could then be covered to create whatever elaborate headwear we wanted. This design was modeled after Polish artist Ula Kóska, who creates exaggerated versions of Slavic flower crowns. This was built by creating a fake turban, then attaching a wrapped wire frame to which bundles of flowers were attached.
